Land Grants

Virginia land grants were granted after proceeding through three steps:

(1) a warrant was obtained by paying an amount of money to the State

Treasury depending on the size of the plat,

(2) the land in question is surveyed by a qualified person, and

(3) the warrant & survey papers are submitted to the State Land Office

for the eventual grant. After the grant, the land is owned by the Grantee

and it may be sold or given to subsequent generations as desired.

Obtaining a land grant may take only a few years, but as long as decades.
Consequently a warrant could be assigned to another person, probably
with the exchange of the original warrant cost.
