Message from David D. Vaughan: "These are notes and clues I transcribed from
some early work of Vida Horton, Margorie Tillamn, and Wilma Chunn. I hope
this helps someone. Some of this material is well documented; other sections
would fall into the family 'legend' catagory."
FACTS & FICTION:Our David Smith Vaughan's parents were William Vaughan and Elizabeth _______________. This William's father was another William Vaughan. Possibly this William Vaughan and his brothers Rueben and Gliffordd are our original immigrants.
William Vaughan (father of our David Smith Vaughan) and his brothers Rueben and Griffidd, according to one family tradition
came to America through Nova Scotia (no verifciation as of yet)
from Wales? (Wilma Chunn) William Vaughan the parent of our
David Smith Vaughan was probably born in Glouster Co., VA near
the town of Fairfield where his ancestors had lived on Vaughan
Creek.He left Glouster Co. and then settled in Caroline Co., VA. where Almond (1756-1842) was born. No date or to who unless it was to Elizabeth (no surname as yet determined.
Records of Albington Church from 1677-1776 show William
Vaughan and Elizabeth had their son, David baptized there,
17 Feb 1760. William was then living in King George Co., VA.
All Glouster records were burned.Culpepper Co., VA records show William Vaughan of County of
King George bought for 200 pounds 400 acres on 20 Sept 1770.

William had a slave by the name of "Anthony."Virginia Historical Genealogy by Broddie:
page 196 - William Vaughan administrator of the estate of
Samuel Johnson (OB 1677-79p277).Meades Old Churches, Ministers and Families of VA Vol 1, page 387,Vestry Book 1685. William Vaughan is listed as a member of
the Vestry.

Rueben Book: Rueben Vaughan Kidd-Soldier of the Confederacy
by Alice V.D.Pierpoint. (Grandson to Rueben Vaughan)page 7:"The rock whence he was hewn. James H. Kidd,
Mecklenburg Militia, said I was drafted into Rueben Vaughan's Company in 1779.*Page 11: The pedigree of Vaughan is Welsh and of great antiquity. The surname first taken by one John, who took it upon himself the name Vahan, small stature. Over 20 coats of arms have been
compiled upon them. A descendent of the first Amorial bearing
came to the West Indies (2nd series, vol. 4 Burke, 1892). Much

David Smith Vaughan - served in the American Revolution in Captain Reuben Lipscomb's Company, 7th Virginia Regiment of Foot Soldiers. (per DAR Lineage book Vol. 113 page 60. Item# 112186), Commanded by Col.Alexander McClannahan (sometimes this unit was designated as Captain Henry Young's Co.). David's name appears in the muster roll dated 21 May 1777, which shows he was furlough in Virginia. After the war he returned home, married and settled just across the Glouster Co., VA line in Fauquire Co., VA. David died after 1809 and had 5 children with wife, Elizabeth ___________. After daughter, Betsy was
married in Old Guard Church in 1809 he either followed Willis or moved with Willis to Luneburg Co., VA. Son James had already left VA and moved to TN, Charlotte where James married. Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties border each other.

Pleasant Vaughan applied for a pension in Sep 1882 at the age of 89, for service in the War of 1812, from Buffalo Lithia (?) Springs, Mecklenburg Co., VA. All evidence was refuted by the army and his claim was not approved. (from Harry L. Gray 1970)
Almond Vaughan of Culpepper Co., VA applied for a pension age 84.
1890 Missouri - Film # 33187 (probably Salt Lake LDS Library) Robert Ashley Vaughan, Private, A - Company, 24 MO Infantry, enrolled 18 Sep 1862. Discharged 23 Aug 1865. Length of service 2years, 11 mo., 5 days.
David Ashley served in the Confederate Army as a doctor.
Robert Jordan Vaughan on 14 Dec 1861 enlisted in the 4th Regiment of the Missouri Volunteers CSA. Appointed corporal 07 Feb 1862. Died at Cone Creek, Arkansas 05 Mar 1862, the day of the battle of Pea Ridge in Prices Army. Family records show he died of fever).
James Thomas, Samuel Newell and Parks Jefferson Pybess (pybus) were in the Confederate Army. Samuel died while serving. The other two served until the end of the war.
James R. Vaughan, son of Thomas H. Vaughan served from 1862-1865 with the Union Army with distinction. Rose to the rank of Sargeant Major at the age of 20. William Hatchett Vaughan was a Captain of a Company of Home Guards in Porter Township (MO? OR?)
William Hatchett Vaughan served with the Oregon Mounted Rifleman during the 1847 Cayuse War in Oregon.
William Hatchett Vaughan named many of sons after Southern Generals and Statemen; his daughters all had a Southern state as a middle name.
