(Was Connected With L. & N. Railroad for 53 Years, Retiring From Service in 1909)
Funeral to be Wednesday
Benjamine O. Vaughan, 90 years old, died at 4:45 o’clock yesterday afternoon at
is residence, 143 Georgetown Street, (Lexington) after a prolonged illness.
Mr. Vaughan was a native of Fayette county, the son of James and Louise Combs
Vaughan, and was engaged in railroad work throughout his lifetime until 1909,
when he retired.
In 1856 Mr. Vaughan was employed as an engineer with the Louisville and
Nashville Railway Company and worked in this capacity throughout the War
Between the States, running from Louisville to Lexington.
Later he gave up his position as engineer and became a master mechanic at the
L. & N. shops here, retaining this position for 34 years. He was the last surviving
railroad engineer who served during the War Between the States.
Mr. Vaughan was a member of the Grace Baptist Church, and was a thirty-second
degree Mason, a member of the Lexington Lodge No. 1, F. & A.M.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Bertha Rogers and Miss Hallie Vaughan,
both of Lexington, and Mrs. G.C. Lyons, of Latonia; three sons, Chester L.
Vaughan of Lexington; R.O. Vaughan, of New Smyrna, Fla. and C.D. Vaughan,
of Latonia(Kenton Co.,); 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the residence at 3 o’clock Wednesday aftern-
oon, with the Rev. W.L. Shearer, pastor of the Grace Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery.
