‘Funeral Rites Held This Morning for Dr. W.B. Vaughan
Funeral rites were held this morning at 11:00 from the Pine Log Methodist Church for Dr.
William Bogle Vaughan, pioneer citizen and well known physician of Bartow County, who
died at his home in White Tuesday afternoon at 2:00.
Born on November 7, 1855, at Cassville, Dr. Vaughan had passed his 76th milestone in life.
He was the son of Captain and Mrs. James N. Vaughan. Dr. Vaughan was graduated from
Southern Medical College in 1891 and had practiced medicine in his home community the
greater part of his active life. On June 8, 1925, he was awarded a honorary degree by
Emory University.
In addition to his life as a physician, Dr. Vaughan was active in the promotion of education
enterprises. He, with one or two others, founded the college at Fairmount. He was a
member of the Masonic Lodge and was a loyal and consistent Mason since early manhood.
He was the first Mayor of White and served the people well in this capacity for serveral terms.
At a early age Dr. Vaughan affiliated with the Methodist Church and has been a member of
the Pine Log Church a greater portion of this time. His home being at White, he regularly
attended services in his home town. He, in company with hs devoted companion, was always
to be found at Sunday School, prayer meeting, League, and preaching services unless he was
ill. On November 16, 1876 Dr. Vaughan was married to Miss Ella Upshaw, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Thomas Upshaw. Five children were born to this union, two of whom died in
infancy. Mrs. Bessie Vaughan Chaney preceeded her father to her heavenly home in 1924.
Surviving him are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. E.C. Goode, of White, and Mrs. C.J. Hughs
of Atlanta, one brother, Charles C. Vaughan of Mount Vernon, Texas, and 3 grandchildren,
E.C. Goode, of White, Walker Chaney of Ft. Worth, Texas and Weldon Hamby of Atlanta.
Rev. J.L. Varner officiated at the services this morning. Pallbearers were: J.M. Hammrick,
Bob Shinall, Murray Upshaw, A.V. Neal, Robert Young, and S.C. Jones.
