“Funeral Service Held Tuesday for Mr. J.A. Vaughan”
Mr. J. A. Vaughan, one of Bartow County’s largest farmers and best known citizens died
at his home on the Tenn. Rd. Sunday, following a weeks illness with pneumonia. Mr.
Vaughan was 46 years old and would have been 47 this month.
Born in Bartow County, Mr. Vaughan had been in farming all his life. In early childhood
he joined the Pine Log Methodist Church and was active in the interest of the church until
his death. He was also active in educational circles, being a member of the board of trustees
of the Peeples Valley School. He was always active in the educational moves and any move
toward the upbuilding of the county.
Known as one of the best farmers in the county, Mr. Vaughan owned several farms and
carried on extensive farming operations. He was a mason and a member of the Junior Order.
He was a son of the late John L. Vaughan, one of Bartow’s pioneer settlers and a brother of
the late Will Vaughan.
Funeral services were conducted from the Pine Log Tabernacle on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00
oclock with the Rev. Varner and Rev. Walter S. Robinson officiating. Interment was in the
Pine Log Cemetery. A quartet composed of Mrs. H.B. Lipscomb, Mrs. L.F. Richards, Mrs.
H.B. Lewis, and Mrs. C.D. Bagwell sang ‘Rock of Ages’ and ‘God Shall Wipe All Tears Away’,
while the choir sang ‘Jesus Lover of My Soul’ and ‘Where He Leads Me I Will Follow’.
The deceased is survived by his wife and eleven children. They are Theo, J.A. JR., James
Oliver, Frank, and William David Vaughan, and Lossie Mae, Adelene, Annie Jo, Mary Lou,
and Vera Vaughan. His mother, Mrs. John L. Vaughan, and ten brothers and sisters survive.
They are Dave Vaughan of Fairmount, H.G. and T.W. Vaughan of Bartow County, S. N. Vaughan
of Miami, Mrs. Ollie Bagwell and Mrs. Arthur Bishop of Americus, Mrs. Mike Maloy of Knoxville,
and Mrs. Fred Bishop, Mrs. Conrad Smith and Mrs. Hugh Rodgers of Cartersville.
The following served as pallbearers, O.T. Peeples, J.W. Vaughan, J.M. Smith, C.H. Cox, W.D.
Davidson, and J.F. Keith. Cummings-Long-Owen Funeral Home were in charge.
