1. Sterling Vaughan, son of John Vaughan who died in Caswell County,
North Carolina, between April 20, 1805 and July Court 1805. This Sterling
is probably "Sterling Vaughan orphan 14 years old the 9 of January last"
who was bound to James Holder at Caswell County October Court 1813.
Therefore born January 9, 1799
2. Starling Vaughan whose mother, Henrietta (Malone) Vaughan gave
power of attorney in Henry County, Tennessee, March 2, 1835, stating that
Jane Vaughan. . .Cinthea Vaughan. . .Nancy Baccus. . .and Starling
Vaughan. . .are "children and only heirs at law of James Vaughan dec'd of
Caswell County. . .to receive from the estate of Thomas Vaughan decd. . .
late of Caswell County. . ." This Starling is said to have been born in 1814.
One Sterling Vaughn is on the 1840 census of Henry County, Tennessee,
page 437: 1110101-01001001 (aged 40-50, so born 1790-1800, which does not
fit with the date of birth (1814) of one Starling Vaughan I know of who is
known to have lived in Henry County). On the same page of the 1840 Henry
County census is a Stephen Vaughn - 00001-100001.
3. Sterling Vaughan who died in Iredell County, North Carolina
Information on him in THE VAUGHAN, ETC. NEWSLETTER, VI:2 says
he had a son born ca 1789, so I would guess that Sterling himself was born
not later than ca 1769. One of Sterling's sons is said to have been William
Vaughan who had a son named Stephen Vaughan who was born in
Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in 1814.
4. Sterling F. Vaughan (born in Virginia ca 1809) was living in
County, Tennessee in 1850. A power of attorney recorded in Caswell County,
North Carolina, shows that he was living in Person County, North Carolina,
on April 14, 1834. A bio- sketch of Dr. Hugh W. Vaughan, who seems to be
son of this Sterling F. Vaughan, states that Hugh W.'s father, S. F. Vaughan,
was born in North Carolina and lived in Granville County, North Carolina,
Fayette County, Tennessee and Panola County, Mississippi (going to Panola
County in 1851). This probably is the same Sterling F. Vaughn who is on the
1840 Fayette County, Tennessee census, page 137 -Sterling F. Vaughn
2000001-2310001 (aged 40-50, so born 1790- 1800, which seems not to fit with
his age in 1850 census if I have copied it correctly).
5. There is a Stirling Vaughan in Jefferson County, Arkansas,
the index to the 1830 census of Arkansas. I have never looked at this film to
try to learn more about him.
7. In the 1850 census of Hancock County, Tennessee, is Sterling
born Tennessee) with Ally (20) and Tinsly (8/12). Next door neighbors of this
Sterling are Thomas Vaughn (aged 21, born Tennessee), Washinton Vaughn
(aged 31, born Tennessee) and Margaret Vaughn (aged 55, born Tennessee),
each with families. The 1840 index does not show any Vaughan in Hancock
County. From THE VAUGHAN, ETC. NEWSLETTER, Nov. 1986, p. 49.
William Vaughn, Jr. m. Margaret "Peggy" Wells. . .lived on the Clinch River
in Hawkins County, Tennessee when Hancock County was formed.
Wiley . . .
Information is given on this family in Seals Family History by Elmer Scalf,
who submitted this information to the Newsletter.
8. Halifax County, Virginia, Deed Book 17, page 255. September
Thomas Wilkins to Starling Vaughan. . . 140 acres in Halifax on both sides
Aron's Creek. Another Vaughan shown in other deeds to have been on
Aaron/Aron's Creek is: John Vaughan of Mecklenburg County, Virginia,
who bought land in 1777 "in Halifax and Mecklenburg on Aaron's Creek";
There are other deeds concerning (apparently) this same John. He seems to
have been closely associated with a James Jones.
