Since this paper was originally compiled [about 1986], I
have sent
copies to several people and they have sent me information
on their
lines, which information I have incorporated into this paper,
so that
it is no longer entirely my own work. In addition to those cor-
respondents, the information came from a number of sources,
including:
1. Material sent to my former correspondent [now deceased],
Janie
Price. Janie had received it from a correspondent in Mississippi.
2. Material I received from the Huntsville, Alabama, Public
Library,
which had been supplied by Mrs. Beverly Bradly Finch, 4233 Cliff
Road, Birmingham, Alabama [1969], who had gotten it from Mrs.
George Wilson Smith [Jean Waldrop] of 1002 East Forest
Street,
Athens, Alabama. Some of the information also had
come from
Floy Wray Vaughan who married Gilbert R. Smith. So
far as I
could tell, Gilbert R. and Floy Wray (Vaughan) Smith were the
parents of George Wilson Smith whose wife was given as a source
for some of the information, but I'm not completely sure that
I
understood correctly.
3. Some of the material sent to me by the people at Huntsville
Library was assembled by someone [not identified] from letters
from Isola Barclift Whitaker [Mrs. J. T. Whitaker of Cullman]
"who now that she is a widow has gone to Texas to live with a
niece. Isola and Ted had no children."
4. Census records of the various counties concerned.
5. Marriage records of the various counties concerned.
6. Original material on the purchase of land for the heirs
of
Hundley Stewart Vaughan furnished to me by the United States
General Services Administration.
1. Manoah Vaughan was born in Georgia,
probably Franklin
County, in the 1790's [sources differ] and died in Alabama July
10, 1870. He is buried in a private cemetery "in
approximately
Section 14-9S- E in Marshall County...about ten miles south
of
Guntersville on Highway 79...". He was the son of Hundley
Vaughan, (?Jr.) who probably was the son of Hundley Vaughan,
Sr. of Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties, Virginia, Union County,
South Carolina, and Franklin County, Georgia. Manoah
Vaughan
married (1) in Madison County, Alabama, February 13, 1813,
Betsey Vaughan [parentage unknown] who was born about 1791
and died December 29, 1846. She is buried beside her
husband.
Manoah is said to have married (2) July 20, 1851, in Morgan
County, Alabama, Sarah Mayhall. This may be correct, but
at the
time of his death in 1870, his wife's name was Anna.
At the time of the War of 1812, Madison County, Alabama, where
Manoah Vaughan was living, was part of the Mississippi
Territory,
and Manoah Vaughan served in the 6th Regiment of the Mississippi
Militia in 1814-1815. Requests to the National Archives for pension
or bounty land applications have brought negative results.
On October 1, 1990, professional genealogist Marilyn Davis
Barefield wrote to her client, Billy W. Fowler, as follows:
"Manoah Vaughn's LW&T was probated 7/13/1870 naming heirs:
widow, Anna; children: Elizabeth P. Henry of Blount Co., Benjamin
of California, Afrey Barclift, wife of Joseph C. Barclift
of Blount
Co., Susan wife of Henry H. Barclift of Blount Co., Ann Eliza
wife
of James S. Hamilton of Marshall Co., Benjamin F. Vaughan,
grandson, heirs of Hundley Vaughn, son deceased residing
in
Tennessee and heirs of Olivia Lewis, dau. deceased of Lawrence
Co."
I have a different list of Manoah's children which I obtained
from
the vertical file in the Huntsville, Alabama, Public Library.
In his
will, Manoah mentioned two children not on this list [Benjamin
and Olivia] and this list names two [Hiram J. and Sallie] not
mentioned in the will. This list is headed:
"Mrs, Beverly Bradley Finch (A.P.Jr.)
4233 Cliff Rd.
(to Ola 7/23/1969)
Birmingham, Ala. 35222
The following info. sent by Mrs. George Wilson
Smith
[Jean Waldrop]
1002 East Forest St.
Athens, Ala.
"The info was obtained from Floy Wray Vaughan,
who married
Mr. Gilbert R. Smith, they were the
parents of the writers
husband."
The children listed are:
Sallie Vaughan who married Hatchett
Tipton;
Hiram Jackson Vaughan who married Maria
Henry;
Isham Vaughan who married Sara Elizabeth
Barclift;
Elizabeth P. Vaughan who married Ake
Henry;
Aphrey Vaughan who married Joseph Barclift;
Ann Vaughan who married
(1) Gilbreath
(2) Hamilton;
Susan N. Vaughan who married Henry Barclift;
Hunley Vaughan who married Elizabeth
Wray.
In listing Manoah Vaughan's children, all of
whom were by his
first wife, Betsey Vaughan, I will name all those mentioned in
his
will and all those mentioned by Mrs. Smith, even though we can
be 100% sure of only those named in the will.
X 2. Hundley Stewart Vaughan
3. Benjamin Vaughan,
who was living in California
in 1870 and of whom I have no further information.
4. Wilmouth Olivia Vaughan
(born ca 1830; died in
Lawrence County,Alabama, before July 1870)
married, in Blount County, Alabama, January 19,
1860, William L. Lewis.
X 5. Sarah (Sallie) Vaughan
X 6. Hiram Jackson Vaughan
X 7. Isham Vaughan
X 8. Elizabeth P. Vaughan
X 9. Aphrey Vaughan
10. Susan Vaughan (born February 28, 1833; died
August 1870)
married Henry
Barclift, who married as his second wife, in
1870, Clara
Gillespy. Henry Barclift was the brother of Joseph
Commander Barclift
who married Aphrey Vaughan [#9] and
of Sarah Elizabeth
Barclift who married Isham Vaughan [#7].
11. Ann Eliza Vaughan (born ca 1835; living in 1870)
married (1)
in Blount County, Alabama, November 1, 1860,
Alexander Gilbreath;
married (2)
James S. Hamilton.
2. Hundley Stewart Vaughan(probably born
ca 1814; died
in 1841)
married in Wilson
County, Tennessee, February 17, 1834,
Elizabeth Wray (born
ca 1818; died in Williamson County,
Tennessee, February
26, 1853) daughter of Willis B. Wray,
and had children:
12. Mary Ann Vaughan (born ca 1835)
X 13. Isom John Campbell Vaughan (born ca 1837)
14. Willis Ray Vaughan (born ca 1839)
On May 9, 1842, Manoah Vaughan filed
a claim with the
Land Office in Huntsville for the above-named three children
to gain title to some land for which their father already had
begun the purchase procedure.
5. Sarah (Sallie) Vaughan
(born ca 1828; living, 1850,in
Blount County, Alabama). Mrs. Smith's information was that
Sallie married Hatchett (Book) Tipton and had children whose
names Mrs. Smith gave as: Susan H. Green Crawford, Isom
Hatchett, Janie Hatchett, Leve Bridges, Mattie Bridges, and
Afrey Tipton Taylor. I think that may be mixed up.
I found
the marriage of Sally Vaughan and Caldwell Hatchet in
Marshall County, Alabama, January 5, 1837, and then found
Sarah Hatchet, apparently a widow, on the 1850 census of
Blount County, Alabama, at which time she had the following
children:
15. Susan Hatchet (1838)
16. Isom Hatchet (1840)
17. Jane Hatchet (1842)
18. Levi Hatchet (1846)
If Sarah (Vaughan) Hatchet remarried after 1850, she might
then have had the children Mrs. Smith called Mattie Bridges
and Afrey Tipton Taylor.
6. Hiram Jackson Vaughan
(born October 24, 1822; died
March 4, 1891 and buried in Ebel Cemetery near
Guntersville, Alabama)
married Sarah Mariah Henry (born August 12, 1833
in Tennessee; died November 11, 1889 and buried
beside her husband) daughter of Aikman (Ake) Henry
and his wife Martha Wilson of McMinn County,
Tennessee, and had known children:
X 19. Annie Elizabeth Vaughan
20. Sallie Vaughan who perhaps
married a Mr. Gilbreath
X 21. James Murphy Vaughan
22. Mattie J. Vaughan (born December
31, 1851; died
February 19, 1880 and buried beside her parents.)
X 23. Ake H. Vaughan
7. Isham (Isom) C. Vaughan (died 1848)
married, in
Davidson County, Tennessee, May 24, 1845,
Sarah Ann Barclift
(Sarah Elizabeth? Mrs. Smith gave
her name as Sarah
Elizabeth, but official records
concerning her separation
from her first husband call
her Sarah Ann.] (probably
died before 1850) daughter of
Samuel Barclift and his
wife Millicent Commander. Sarah
Ann had married when she
was 16 or 17, Jesse Shelton,
who was "old enough to be
her father". They had several
children, but he was abusive
and eventually, her brother,
John H. Barclift, "took
her home". She apparently resumed
her maiden name for when
she married Isham C. Vaughan,
her name was given as Barclift.
They had one child:
24. Benjamin F. Vaughan (born ca 1847) who
married, in
Morgan County, Alabama, November 14, 1871,
Mary Henrietta
Baker of Danville, Alabama. After the death
of Benjamin
F. Vaughan, Mary Henrietta (Baker) Vaughan
married , in
Blount or Morgan* County, Alabama, on August
16, 1876, Professor
Manoah V. Henry (born 1847), son of
Elizabeth P.
Vaughan and Ake Henry. After Helen's death,
Manoah Henry
married Fannie Cochran, by whom he had
no children.
*This marriage apparently registered in both
counties.
8. Elizabeth P. Vaughan (born April 7, 1824;
died in 1892 in
Birmingham, Jefferson
County, Alabama) married, April 21,
1842, in Blount County,
Alabama, Ake Henry, and had known
children:
25. James Henry (1837)
26. Martha Henry (1844)

died May 27, 1891, in Blountsville,

S. Barclift and Millicent
Commander, and had known
children:
X29. Mary Olivia Barclift
X30. Thomas Manoah Vaughan Barclift
13. Isham (Isom) John Campbell Vaughan (born ca 837)

Ann Aiken of Aiken, South Carolina, and
had children:

Vaughan Barclift, son of Aphrey
Vaughan and
Joseph Commander Barclift.

Memphis, Tennessee and worked
for "Memphis Power

had no issue.
23. Ake H. Vaughan [He probably is the A. H. Vaughan,
