Vaughans from Ireland
to North Carolina

Submitted by Paul W. Vaughn

According to Irish records there were no Vaughan spellings in Ireland.  The Irish name of
Vaughan came from the name O'Fishain, son of Fiachain.

The English and Welsh Vaughan's derived their names from the Welsh word Fychan,
(pronounced vuh-kahn, with accent on the second syllable), meaning little or small.  The
surname was transported to Ireland in the sixteenth century as a result of settlers or soldiers
who traveled across the Irish Sea from England and Wales.
Sometime around or before the
Revolution, four Irish brothers and families left Ireland for America and ended up in the
Halifax District of Nash County, North Carolina around 1775.  Their names were Dempsey
(Demey), Ephraim, Frederick (Fred) and Stephen (my ancestor).
The first Federal Census was conducted in 1790 listed:

            - Dempsey, a widower, died in 1790.  All his land and holdings were willed to his
Son Christopher Vaughan.  (Sold to Stephen Vaughan)

            - Ephriam Asbury, died in 1797 and willed all his land and holdings to his son
Vincent Vaughan.  (Sold to Stephen Vaughan)

            - Frederick, migrated from this area and we have no further record of him.
              - Stephen, was born in Ireland around 1755 and was married to Mary (?) about
              the same age.

North Carolina became a State in 1789.

            Stephen Vaughan Sr:
The 1790 Federal Census Halifax District of Nash County, North Carolina lists:
            - Dempsey Vaughan - Free white males 16 & up Inc head of families  (1), Under
              16, (2), free white females (0)

            - Stephen Vaughan - Free white males 16 & up Inc head of families (1), under

            - Emphriam Vaughan - Free white males 16 & up incl head of families (1),

            - Frederick Vaughan - Free white males 16 & up incl head of families (2), under

Stephen Vaughan purchased 200 acres of land from Christopher Vaughan on 1 March 1785,
150 acres of land from John Heffler on 23 November 1788, and 103 acres of land from Patty
Vaughan (Wife of Ephriam) on 31 August 1798.

The 1800 Federal Census Halifax District of Nash County, North Carolina lists:

A Frederick Vaughan is listed in Stokes County in North West, North Ccarolina.  (Possible
brother of Stephen Vaughan)
Stephen Vaughan Sold 466 acres of land to Eli Williams on
27 November 1809 for 133 pounds, 16 shillings, Virginia money.

The Stephen Vaughan family moved from Halifax District, Nash County, North Carolina
after November 1809.
Supposedly moved to Tennessee before 1810 the Federal Census.

The 1810 Federal Census of North Carolina, & Tennessee did not list any of the Vaughan's
of this line.  Tennessee was partly canvassed and all families were not listed.

Tennessee became a state in 1796, MS became a State in 1817.  Alabama became a State 5 July
1819.  Marion County was created on 13 February 1818 and included Fayette, Lamar,
Walker & Winston Counties and most of Monroe and Lowndes Counties Mississippi, parent
County was Tuscaloosa.  Franklin County was created 1818, parent
County was Cherokee & Chickasaw Territory.  First Federal Censes of Marion County
taken in 1930.

A group of Scotch-Irish who had tried framing in Tennessee in 1809 settled in the northern
part of Alabama, in the rich Tennessee Valley district.  In the early 1800's former Carolinians
and Virginians came into the central part of the territory.
The 1820 Federal Census of Alabama, North Carolina, & Tennessee did not list any Vaughan's
of this line of this relationship.  Marion & Jefferson Counties were not on the Federal Governments
population list.  Federal Census lost for all counties.
Stephen Vaughan and family moved to what later became Winfield, Marion County, Alabama
around 1819 and homesteaded land.

            Stephen Vaughan Jr:
The 1830 (first) Federal Census of Marion County Alabama does not list a Stephen Vaughan (Sr).
