My
paternal roots are in West Tennessee. My father was born in Covington, TN. I now live just south of San Francisco.
My
great-grandfather, Moses (“Mose”) Shirley Vaughan,
fought for the CSA - Co. K, 51st TN Regiment (combined with 52nd after Shiloh
because of casualties there), Wright's Brigade, Cheatham’s Division, Hardee’s Corps). My father believed Grandpa Mose deserted shortly after the Battle of Franklin, where
according to my father, “[he] was struck by a cannon ball that grazed his back,
raising a blister but not drawing blood.”
