Notes for QUINCY ANDERSON:

I discovered Quincy Anderson's name, who is my 2nd-great grandmother in the Official Slave Tax Records at the Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky Court House. I visited Hopkinsville, Kentucky in May of 1997 after obtaining my great-grandfather, Burrell's birth location in 1996 while doing research at the Mueller Funeral Home and the Maple Grove Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas. The Mueller Funeral Home handled Burrell Anderson's funeral arrangements and he was laid to rest in the Maple Grove Cemetery.

 

Christian County, Kentucky, Court House Records  indicate that Burrell Anderson was with Quincy, his mother, at least through his 12th birthday in the year 1860.

Notes for BURRELL ANDERSON:

Burrell purchased his first land for the price of thirty-five dollars. This transaction transpired on May 17, 1866 in the town of Dresden which is located in Pettis County, Missouri. He possibly was not married at that time because his name was the only name on the deed. (Research Question; (Where did Burl obtain the money to buy land so soon after slavery ended?) ea

While living in Dresden, Burrel and Susan attended First Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church, Sedalia, Missouri. Susan Anderson's name is mentioned in Taylor Chapel's Founder's Day Celebration Book on page 9, “OUR BEGINNING”, dated June 27, 1982. The Church was founded in 1867and they celebrated their 115th year. I obtained a Founder's day program booklet in Dresden Missouri during my June 1996 visit.

 

Burrel sold his land and left Dresden, Missouri in late 1884. It was noted that he was unmarried on the Warranty Deed and recording document.  I have yet to discover what happen to Susan, his wife. I located Burrel again in the 1885 Wichita City Directory, with no wife, just he and the children.  His first name is spelled "B-u-r-t" instead of Burl probably due to a type setting error. However, all the children's names were spelled correctly. Burrel's address was listed as 630 4th Avenue.   Note: “government officials and publications during the years prior to 1900 would often use various spellings of individual’s names.” ea

And it was customary for most people just to make their mark instead of signing or either printing their name.

Mueller Funeral Home noted is Late address listed as 1427 Mead St.  Wichita, KS. age at passing 76.

Note “The spelling of Burell's name and his year of birth, frequently are different from one document to the next. Earlier Census records establish his birth as 1838. ”ea

Evidence would lead me to believe that Susan Clay-Anderson attended First Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church, Sedalia, Missouri.  Susan Anderson's name is mentioned in Taylor Chapel's 115th year Founder's Day Celebration Book on page 9, "OUR BEGINNING", Dated June 27, 1982.  This Black Church was founded in 1867 by Rev. Spencer Taylor.

1942 Wichita City Directory, only Sylvester is listed, his wife Charlotte L. is not mentioned. I am assuming she died around 1938-1940.

 

In 1942, Syl held the rank of Lieutenant at the fire Department

Sylvester retired from the fire department, 3rd Engine Company in 1944 as a Captain.

 

His name and picture were printed in the publication,  "Hundred Years of Wichita Fire Fighters",  published in 1978. (Salt Lake City Family History Center. 3/13/96)

PRYOR Bet. 1913 - 1915 in Wichita, Kansas, daughter of DANIEL PRYOR and ROSANNA SMITH.  She was born 24 Mar 1889 in Wichita, Kansas, and died 10 Mar 1929 in Wichita, Kansas.

 

Notes for THOMAS BURL ANDERSON, "BUD":

Thomas and Gertrude lived at 1430 Wabash Ave. Wichita, Kansas at the time of Claude Sylvester Anderson's birth.  Thomas was age 34 and worked as a shipping clerk for the Coleman Later Company.  Gertude was age 29, and Gertrude was a housewife.

 

Tommy worked as a shipping clerk at the Coleman Company for "old man Coleman" prior to becoming a Wichita, Kansas Police Officer. (Information from Wichita newspaper clippings and Census Records.)

 

   (Newspaper headline) Anderson Will Retire from Police Force

Halloween marks the last day in uniform for Tommy Anderson, age 60, colored, living at 1319 East Murdock. He has shaken thousands of door knobs during his 22 years with the Wichita Police Department, it was announced by T. H. Jaycox, Police Chief.

   Anderson was accepted for retirement at a special meeting of the police pension board Thursday. He became a uniformed policemen here September 26, 1922. At retirement he is a Patrolmen first class.

  J.S. "Father Fugit described Tommy as a fine cop. "I worked the North Main Beat with him for years," "Father" said "Tommy and I made a lot of raids together," he mused, "all sorts of things, raids on robbery cases and the like. "Tommy was always doing something comical"

   As per Charles Anderson, his son, "Thomas Anderson put his age back so as to qualify for the Police Officer's job. He started 9/26/1922. Retired 11/01/1944 with 22 years of service, Patrolman 1st Class." His obituary reads, born March 17, 1895.

Services  were held at St. Matthews Colored Methodist Episcopal Church (CME), Thursday July 3, 1958 at 2:00 PM. Thomas was approximately 78 years old. Internment was at Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas. Tommy lived in Wichita, Kansas for 60 years and died at age 63 Physician-Dr Burney, Jackson Mortuary Service Officiated.

Mother's maiden name was Susan Clay.

 

   As per the Wichita Negro Year Book of 1922-23, Anderson, Thomas, Baptist and a Policemen resided at 628 Wabash Street with property valued at $5000.00. Thomas states that he arrived in Wichita, Kansas in the year 1888.

 

   Thomas was also a member of the Arkansas Valley Masonic Lodge and had earned the 33rd Degree.

Some friends called him "Bud" and coworkers called him "Tommy".
