Winfield Scott Vaughn was born in Berks County, PA, on
January 1, 1861, to Robert and Elizabeth (nee Walkup/Wachob) Vaughn. His
parents appear to have had older children, per the 1850 federal census: James,
John, Nancy, and George. There also appears to be an 13 year gap between
George, born approximately 1848, and Winfield, born in 1861, so there may be a
few more in between. Winfield’s birth information comes from his death
certificate, but I’ve spoken with his daughter who gave this information to the
Pensacola Coroner, and she admits that their family knew very little about
their father; they had no idea until 2002 that he had 5 other children or a
previous marriage. The census information and the death certificate
information vary, and the towns and counties are a hundred miles apart.
He was, most likely, born in Huntingdon, PA. From the census information,
both parents were born in PA.
Winfield married Belle Quick on January 1, 1883, in Peoria, Illinois. Their marriage certificate lists his occupation as “miner.” Coincidently, her date of birth was January 1, 1865, and she was born in England. She died September 16, 1950.
Together, they had the following five children: William
(Robert), Bertha (who died young), Myrtle, Grace, and Mabel. Some of
their historical information is known to me, including their married names,
children’s names, and places and dates of death.
Winfield left Illinois before 1920, moved to Florida, and
had four children.. Winfield Jr., LeRoy Bloodworth, Anna Mae
Middlebrooks, and Hazel Brock. I’ve spoken with Anna Mae (on January 25,
2002). She recalls basically nothing concerning her father.
Winfield Jr. died on April 7, 1993, of stomach cancer. Hazel is
recovering from a type of stomach cancer. The children were raised by
family members in the Pensacola area. LeRoy Bloodworth has/had not had
contact with the family in several years. His whereabouts are unknown.
William Robert Vaughn married Catherine Anderson. They
had three children: William Roland, Glen, and a daughter who died in
infancy. Robert died of stomach cancer at age 36.
William Roland Vaughn married Pansy Rheinheimer. They
had three children: William Warren, Joan (Mutchek), and Iris (Lang). Joan
had two daughters, Sherrie and Dana. Iris had the following 5 children:
Melodie, Mark, Brandy, Joy, and Adam (died young). Pansy died of pneumonia in
1935. Roland remarried Lebera Castagna in 1938. They had no
children. Roland died of a lung ailment, possibly a type of tuberculosis,
on June 24, 1952.
William Warren was born on July 4, 1934. He married Dorothy Marie Fischer of Lawrenceville, Illinois, in 1961. They had two children: Debbie Lynn, and William Bradley. William Warren died on January 18, 2000, of esophageal cancer.
William Bradley Vaughn was the person tested.
