VAUGHAN ROSTER

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA

The within document is an attempt to list every Vaughan that appears in Prince Edward County, Virginia records prior to 1850, with a general reference to the records wherein they appear. An attempt has been made to separate those with the same given name where possible. Needless to say there is a measure of subjectivity involved, especially if the given name is very common (i.e. James, John, William). The following table list in excess of 60 Vaughan males or females in Prince Edward, VA prior to 1850.

The following records are NOT included in this table:

•Deeds

•Marriages

•Estates

Explanation

•Given Name. The personal tax digests often revealed the name of the father. In the early years a taxpayer would list sons aged 16 years or older.

•Deed Column. The larger font date (or date range) are dates in which a person appears in a deed (in any capacity). The smaller font is a summary of land bought or sold.

•Tax. Up to three ranges of years may be in a given row. The first being years taxes were paid by the father; the second being years paid by the person directly; and the third being years paid by the estate of the person.

The Personal Tax Digests are very informative as to young men who come of age and then leave the area prior to appearing in any other record.

From Land Taxes Land Divided into 6 shares plus dower tract

Samuel Vaughan paid taxes on 169 acres starting in 1782, This land is most likely the share of land of one of the sons of William Vaughan of Charles City County. Samuel d. about 1803. His estate was kept together through 1811. In 1812, 51 acres was set aside for dower and kept in the estate; and the balance was divided into 6 shares of 19 2/3 acres each. (An 1805 survey and 1811 Order shows 178 acres with 59 ½ acres set aside as dower and six shares of 19 5/6 acres each.) We know George, Samuel, Thomas and Williams each owned 4 of the 19 2/3 acre tracts, which indicates they were highly likely sons of Samuel. The daughters that received the other two shares went to Nancy Vaughan and Martha, wife of John Blackwell (See 1805 Survey and 1811 Order). By 1820 one of the children of Samuel had died (without issue) and one share reverted back to the estate. This left 70 2/3 acres in the estate. In about 1830, 40 acres was sold off leaving 30 2/3 acres which was sold in about 1840.
