Land Records

William Vaughan

On 20 Apr 1680, William Vaughan was granted a Patent for 1225 acres on the ss of Appomattox R. and Blackwater Cr. adj. Hugh Lee, being: 100 acres purchased of Hugh Lee; 100 acres purchased of Robert Burgess; 720 acres assigned to said Vaughan by Hugh Lee, William Barron and Gill Pratt; and 305 acres 32 poles for transporting 7 persons. Commonwealth of Virginia Colonial Patent Book 7, page 30. Cavaliers & Pioneers, Volume 2, page 208.

Note: At the time this land was in Charles City County. Determining the exact location of this land is most assuredly impossible. Although we cannot determine the exact location we can make a pretty good guess. The only place where the waters of the southside of the Appomattox River meet the waters of the Blackwater River is right in the corner of Prince George County where the Prince George County and Dinwiddie County dividing line meets the City limits of Petersburg.

William Vaughan d. in 1694 in Charles City Co. Virginia. Among others, he named his wife Sarah Vaughan and sons

William Vaughan, Richard Vaughan, John Vaughan, Samuel Vaughan, Daniel Vaughan, James Vaughan and Nicholas Vaughan in his will. Char City Co., Va. Will Book __, dated 24 Mar 1692, proved 4 Jun 1694. He gave his land to his seven sons to be divided equally.

The division of his land amounted to 169 acres per son. In 1703, Prince George County was formed out of Charles City County. His land was then in Prince George County. Prince George County, Va 1704 Quit Rent:

On 15 Oct 1698, William Vaughan and Richard Vaughan were jointly granted a patent for 281 acres of land between Hatcher's Run and Moncusneck Creek in Charles City County [present day Dinwiddie Co]. Virginia Patent Book 8, Page 244. Thus, their 309 acres equals 169 acres plus 1/2 of 281 acres.

William Vaughan’s wife Sarah later remarried James Severcar. See chancery suit September 13, 1715, John Vaughan and Samuel Vaughan vs. James Severcar. Prince George County, O.B. 2, page 33, 49.

DNA COMMENT

William Vaughan has been conclusively identified as a member of the Orange DNA Subgroup of the FTDNA Vaughan DNA Project. A number of his descendants through his son Nicholas have been tested and a few distinctive yDNA markers have been found. If you are not a member of the Orange DNA subgroup labeled under Nicholas Vaughan, you do descend from this branch

Further complicating matters is the fact that the Nicholas Vaughan Orange DNA Subgroup and the Vaughan Cyan DNA Subgroup intermingled in Dinwiddie Co. These branches are not at all close genetically. Both branches have a very large group of descendants.
