NOTTOWAY COUNTY, VIRGINIA

VAUGHAN FAMILY WIKI

This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. Facts about where these early Vaughan family members moved to after they left Southside Virginia will be particularly welcome.

The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number.

Asa Vaughan

Asa Vaughan - See Amelia Co.

Crawford Vaughan - G998-T58

Crawford Vaughan. Based upon personal tax digests, Crawford Vaughan was born abt. 1775. Crawford left very few records. He lived most of his life in Nottoway County (1796-1840). However, from personal property tax digests we learn that he was in Amelia County in 1804 and 1809; and Lunenburg County in 1810-1811. From the 1810 census of Lunenburg Co,. we discover he was b. 1765-1784. We learn the most about his family from a single deed, wherein he gave up any right to lands inherited by his children through his wife (VA Nottoway DB 04.259). Elijah Cabaniss made his will (probated in 1799) leaving property to his wife Martha Cabaniss and upon her death or remarriage to her four children: Alce (Alice) Cabaniss, Asa Cabaniss, Anthony Cabaniss and Abner Cabaniss. Alce (Alice) married Crawford Vaughan. Alce died before her mother Martha Cabaniss. Crawford Vaughan gave an 1812 quitclaim deed to his children: Maria Jones Vaughan, Elizabeth Vaughan, Asa Vaughan and Abner Vaughan to release any rights he might have to the property inherited. His sons Abner & Asa paid personal taxes in 1826-1828 in Nottoway Co. There is no further information yet discovered on this family.

Daniel Vaughan (Son of Isham Vaughan) - G997-WVJ

Daniel Vaughan, Apparent son of Isham Vaughan. The 1810 and 1820 Census indicate Daniel was b. before 1765. Daniel was m. to Susan Anderson, dau. of John Anderson (VA Nottoway Court Order Book 07.194; VA Nottoway WB 01.299). His father Isham gave him 133 acres on David Vaughan’s Spring Br. in 1791 (VA Nottoway DB 01.140). Daniel paid personal taxes 1783 to 1788 in Amelia Co; and 1789 to 1830 in Nottoway Co. He paid taxes on the 133 acres gifted to him from 1791 until 1830. After that, his estate paid the taxes. However, there is no estate found in Nottoway Co. From the 1810-1820 census records it appears he had one son and four daughters.

David Vaughan (Son of Isham Vaughan) - G99Q-PTV

David Vaughan, Apparent son of Isham Vaughan. After Isham gave 133 acres to his son Daniel, he had 50 acres left which he apparently gave to his son David Vaughan. In 1795 David sold the land, also on David Vaughan’s Spring Br. (VA Nottoway DB 01.492). David m. Catherine Anderson, dau. of John Anderson (VA Nottoway Court Order Book 07.194; VA Nottoway WB 01.299; VA Nottoway WB 01.401). David paid personal taxes 1782 to 1788 in Amelia Co; and 1789-1795 in Nottoway Co. By 1798 he was in Lunenburg Co.

David Vaughan (Son of John Vaughan) - G9MR-P2Y

David Vaughan, Son of John Vaughan. David remained in Nottoway County and paid taxes on the land he inherited through at least 1850. The 1850 Census indicates he was b. abt. 1785 in Nottoway County. The 1820 - 1850 Census records are inconclusive about him having any children that survived to adulthood.

Elizabeth Vaughan (Daughter of Nicholas Vaughan) - LCVJ-HH9

Elizabeth Vaughan (Daughter of Nicholas Vaughan). She m. _____ Hudson and was living in Jefferson County, AL in 1841. See VA Nottoway DB 10.463-1.

Isham Vaughan - LDNY-PT1

Isham Vaughan. [Summary to be supplemented as a part of the Amelia Co. wiki.] In 1791, Isham gave 133 acres on David Vaughan’s Spring Br. to his apparent son Daniel Vaughan (VA Nottoway DB 01.140). 50 acres remained in his estate. On 1 Oct 1795 David Vaughan & his wife Catharine sold 50 acres on David Vaughan’s Spring Br. to John Shurfield (VA Nott DB 01.492). This is at least some evidence that David Vaughan is likewise a son of Isham Vaughan.

James Vaughan (Son of Robert Vaughan) - LZPS-TTX

James Vaughan. Based on 1810 to 1840 census records, James Vaughan was b. abt. 1775-1780. He did not pay personal property taxes until 1815 which suggests he lived elsewhere for a while. He married Jane H. Craddock on 23 Feb 1810 in Amelia County. If her age in the 1850 Census (See Joseph N. Vaughan 1850 Nottoway Co.) is correct, she would have been 13 years old. When James died in 1833, he was still married to her. (VA Nottoway WB 06.409). After his death she m. Richard H. Jenkins (Amelia Chancery Case 1840-008, VA Nottoway WB 07.273, 1850 Census). The executor of his estate was his nephew James A. Vaughan [of Amelia Co.]. Now, the tangled web of interwoven families emerges. Jane H. Craddock was the daughter and only child of William Craddock of Amelia Co. Her mother was Sarah Truly, who married (2) to Robert Vaughan of Amelia Co. (See Amelia Chancery Cases: 1800-025, 1824-016, 1824-020 & 1833-011). Her mother is the subject of Chancery Case 1840-008 in Amelia Co. James A. Vaughan, executor of James Vaughan was the half brother of Jane H. Craddock.

His children were:

Amelia E. Vaughan. She paid land taxes on 275 acres of land she inherited from her father in 1849 and 1850.

John Vaughan. Sr. - LHV1-N57

John Vaughan. Sr. John first appears in Amelia Co. [This summary will be supplemented and updated after Amelia County is reviewed.] From a Series of deeds, we learn that John m. Lucy Featherstone, a daughter of Lewis Featherstone (VA Nottoway DB 01.132, 01.210, 01.212, 01.214). The 1810 Census reveals he was b. before 1765. He was in Nottoway Co when it was formed and consistently paid taxes from 1789-1818. He was deceased by 1820. His will (Nottoway WB 04.147) named sons: Lewis Vaughan, William Vaughan, David Vaughan deceased daughter Lucy Spain. He lived on Woody Cr. and gave his lands to sons Lewis and David. His wife Lucy was not named in his will and is presumed to have been deceased.

Lewis Vaughan, Son of John Vaughan. Lewis paid taxes on the land he inherited from his father in 1820. There is no other record of him.

John Vaughan, Jr. (Son of Nicholas Vaughan) - L4BT-6YN

John Vaughan, Jr. (Son of Nicholas Vaughan). He was b. abt. 1775-1780; and died abt. 1845-1846 in Nottoway Co. There are no details on his estate nor are there any chancery cases. He appears to have had at least 2 sons and 2 daughters (1830-1840 Census). He lived on Ellis Fork. He m. Mary Price Pulliam, [widow of Austin Fowlkes] 27 Jul 1812 in Prince Edward Co.

Joseph N. M. Vaughan (Son of James Vaughan) - KCYN-L5Q

In 1849, he started paying taxes on 1043 ½ acres inherited from his father James. His mother b. 1797 in Amelia County is listed as June A. (rather than Jane H.) Jenkins.

They all joined in and sold the land (VA Nottoway DB 10.463-1; and VA Nottoway DB 10.463-2).
