CHARLOTTE COUNTY, VIRGINIA

VAUGHAN FAMILY WIKI

This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. Facts about where these early Vaughan family members moved to after they left Southside Virginia will be particularly welcome.

The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number.

Abraham Vaughan - LDNY-PJG

Abraham Vaughan was b. abt. 1725 in Prince George Co., Va., the son of Nicholas Vaughan; and d. 1795 in Charlotte Co., Va. He was orphaned by 1738. He was m. at twice. His wife as of 1750 was Mary (VA Amelia DB 04.016). Later he m. Anne thought to be Anne Boulden. As a young man he moved to the frontier of Lunenburg Co. to an area that became Charlotte Co. He owned land on Lickinghole Cr. and HorsepenCr. His eldest son William was b. of his first marriage to Mary. All of his other children were b. to his second marriage to Anne.

His children were: William Vaughan (m. Patsey Mimms, dau. of Thomas Mimms on 23 Sep 1781), Felix Vaughan, Bolling (Boulden) Vaughan (m. Susanna Fuqua, dau. of John Fuqua 2 Jun 1790. See Halifax Co. Chancery Case 1823.028 (a must read) & 1831.013), John Vaughan (m. Nancy Callicot 5 Oct 1792), Lewis Vaughan (m. Mary Childrey, dau. of Benjamin Childrey 23 Nov 1801), Milly Vaughan (m. Benoni Smith 5 Mar 1789), Sally Vaughan (m. Perry Mahany 19 May 1784), Nancy Vaughan (m. Jeremiah Childry/Childers/ Childress 7 Nov 1792), Polly Vaughan (d. 1799), David Vaughan & Bailey Vaughan (d. 1795 without wife or children). There are two major Chancery cases arising out of the estate of Abraham. (Charlotte Chancery 1802-013; and 1810-006). Both cases arose when Bailey d. and his share of the estate was divided among his siblings. (Polly’s son Archer did not participate, most likely because he was illegitimate.) Both cases are extremely informative. Abraham or his estate appear in the early personal and land tax digests of Charlotte Co.

He or his estate paid taxes 1802-1846 in Charlotte Co.

James Vaughan - K8SC-V3P

James Vaughan was b. around 1769 cased upon tax digests. He m. Sarah Dabbs, dau. of Richard Dabbs on 5 Oct 1789. He appears in the personal tax digests 1790-1797; and the land tax digests 1793-1797. He apparently moved to Caswell Co., N.C. abt. 1798. He owned 42 acres which had been gifted by Richard Dabbs in 1792. James sold it to Richard Dabbs, Sr. in 1797. James, in 1822 as a resident of Caswell Co., N.C., gifted land devised by father Richard Dabbs to James Dabbs, friend & brother.

There are two other James Vaughans in early Charlotte Co.: (1) James Vaughan, son of William Vaughan m. Jincey Clement 28 Nov 1804. He paid personal taxes 1804-1807 and then d. in 1807. (2) James Vaughan m. Nancy Hatchett, dau. of Thomas Hatchett & Phoebe _____, 2 Apr 1806. See Chancery Cases 1813-008 & 1824-017. He paid personal taxes in 1806.

John Vaughan

John Vaughan (1) first appears in Charlotte Co. in 1760 as the recipient of a 400 acre grant on bs Reeces Fork of Twitty's Creek. On 1 Nov 1769, John Vaughn, of Nottoway Parish Amelia Co., deeded the 400 acre tract of land to Robert Vaughn, Jr. also of Nottoway Parish Amelia Co.(VA Charlotte DB 02.241). There is no record of John or Robert deeding the land at a later date.

John Vaughan (RT or RF)

John Vaughan (2) was b. before 1765 and died about 1825 or 1826. He was sometimes tagged as RT or RF in the tax digests. He first appears paying personal taxes in 1785; and continued to pay personal taxes through1825. In 1791 he started paying land taxes on 400 acres; and continued to pay on 400 acres through 1818. There is no deed to him for the 400 acres. He died intestate and his administrator was James A. Vaughan. The only James A. Vaughan found in that time period lived in Amelia Co. His estate contained no distributions to heirs.

John Vaughan (other)

John Vaughan (3) was b. before 1767. He paid personal taxes in Charlotte Co. 1788-1794. John Vaughan (4), son of Abraham; and John Vaughan (5) son of John both paid personal taxes in 1793. One of them paid personal taxes sporadically through 1797; and the other paid personal taxes continuously through 1798. It is impossible to distinguish the two.

Joshua Vaughan - LHJ1-RH2

Joshua Vaughan is likely Joss Vaughan, b. 1722, son of Daniel Vaughan and Elizabeth of Bristol Parish. He m. Sarah _____ in Bristol Parish and had sons James, b. in 1745 and Jesse, bapt. in 1751. Later he and Sarah move near Abraham Vaughan in Charlotte County. This appears to be a matter of chance as Abraham is a member of Subgroup 11 Orange of the Vaughan DNA Project. All indications are that Joshua is a member of Subgroup 5 Cyan of the Vaughan DNA Project. Joshua and Sarah were even closer to Thomas Chaffin, Joseph Chafin and Joshua Chaffin in Charlotte Co. The significance of that bears a little explaining. In 1775 Mary Leathe gave to her grandson Alexander Vaughn a young negro girl named Beck for natural love and affection. This deed was witnessed by John Chafin, Joshua Chafin and Joseph Chafin. Charlotte County, Virginia Deed Book 3, Page 524. This is a powerful clue that frustratingly leaves a lot open to interpretation. See a separate document concerning Alexander Vaughan. In 1765 Joshua was granted 400 acres on Sanson’s Fork of Horsepen Cr. He sold it in 1777 and his wife Sarah released her dower rights. Later still Joshua and Sarah moved near William “T” Vaughan in Mecklenburg Co. James Wilkins sold 300 acres to his son in law James Vaughan [Slave Joe] in 1775. Then in 1777 the same James Wilkins sold 100 acres to Joshua Vaughan who had just sold his land in Charlotte Co. Joshua paid personal taxes 1782-1784 and land taxes on the 100 acres 1782-1785 in Mecklenburg Co. He sold the land in 1784 and his wife Sarah released her dower rights.

Vaughan, Martha W. Vaughan, Josiah Vaughan, Jr., b. abt. 1807, Mary E. Vaughan (m. John N. Schmidt), Sarah Vaughan (m. Richard Lipscomb), Zedekiah C. Vaughan, b. abt. 1817 (m. William Lunderman 20 December 1799), Jesse Vaughan, Francis Vaughan, Josiah Vaughan, Paschal Vaughan (never married) & Elizabeth Vaughan (m. Tucker).
