VAUGHAN FAMILY WIKI

This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. Facts about where these early Vaughan family members moved to after they left Southside Virginia will be particularly welcome.

The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number.

David Vaughan - G99Q-PTV

David Vaughan was b. abt. 1750. Based solely upon personal tax digests he was most likely the son of Isham Vaughan. He d. in late 1768 or early 1769. The inventory of his estate is quite small. It includes some finer clothing and some books, but nothing to much in household goods or farming stuff. The inventory coupled with his estate account showing he was paid to school various children is conclusive that he was a school teacher. The tithables lists indicate he was most likely the son of Isham and very young. The fact that he owned little else is suggestive that he was unmarried without children.

Some think that Isham’s son is David Smith Vaughan (LJP4-R1R) who d. in Lunenburg Co., Va.

Jane Vaughan was the admr. & apparent widow of John Worsham (Inventory & Appraisal 24 Nov 1757. VA Amelia WB 1.129). She was the dau. of Thomas Bottom. In his 1765 will he named: son Thomas Bottom, dau. Jane Vaughan, granddau. Frances Worsham and granddau. Mary Hubbard. He gave a slave named “Bett” to Jane. She paid taxes on her 1763-1765. Observation: Jane was widowed by 1757 and then remarried John Vaughan on 21 Nov 1759. He then died by 1762.

John Vaughan - L1KG-PH6

John Vaughan left almost no footprint. He is mentioned in that he did not have an estate and was old enough to have had children. He m. Jane Bottom, widow of John Worsham, on 21 Nov 1759 and was deceased by 1762. She had grown children when she m., so John was old enough to have had children as well.

John Vaughan - LHV1-N57

John Vaughan m. Lucy Featherstone, dau. of Lewis Featherstone (Amelia DB 20.106, Amelia DB 20.109, Chancery 1783-010). He paid personal taxes 1782-1788 and land 1782-1788. He likely paid taxes prior to that time, but it too difficult to determine which John Vaughan is which prior to 1782. His land became a part of Nottoway Co. when it was formed. See Nottoway Co. after 1788.

John Vaughan - MQK9-TQ1

John Vaughan b. abt. 1768, d. abt. 1806, the son of Lewelling (Lewis) Vaughan (Lewis Vaughan names him in his will but does not identify him as a son like he did for his other children). Thomas Nelson was appointed guardian of his children: Sally Vaughan (Amelia WB 10.223), Winney Vaughan (Amelia WB 10.228), Lucy Vaughan (Amelia WB 10.233), Jesse Vaughan (Amelia WB 10.238), Thomas H. Vaughan (VA Amelia WB 10.242), and John Vaughan (Amelia WB 10.246). They all reached adulthood by 1824. He is one and the same as John Vaughan of Prince Edward Co. who m. Betsy Nelson 11 February 1792. He paid personal taxes there 1788-1791; and land taxes 1801-1803. When his father Lewelling Vaughan d. in 1802 he gave his son John Vaughan 150 acres on Flat Cr. adj. John Mitchell. [No record is found that he owned this 150 acres, nevertheless it is in his will.] In 1803, John started paying taxes on the 150 acres. In 1805 John sold 45 ½ acres of that tract on Flat Cr., adjacent John Mitchell (Amelia DB 22.164). The remaining 104 ½ acres stayed in his estate until it was sold to Thomas Webster on 15 Jan 1821 (Chancery 1824.028).

Lewis Vaughan - LDNY-5KF

Lewelling (Lewis) Vaughan was b. abt. 1718 in Prince George Co. (Amelia Co. Tithables Lists) and d. abt. 1802 in Amelia Co. (Amelia WB 06.222). He is believed to be the son of Nicholas Vaughan. He was m. to Winifred _____ as of 1758 (Amelia DB 06.191). He m. Sally Davenport 26 Mar 1788. From the tithables list there is some evidence that his sons were Jesse, b. 1747-1749, William, b. 1749-1751, and Zedekiah, b. 1760-1765. He named son John Vaughan, dau. Susannah Vaughan, son Hezekiah? Vaughan, and son William Vaughan, as well as grandson Lewis Vaughan in his will. His grandson Lewis Vaughan was b. bef. 1784 (Amelia DB 22.160).

He paid a tithables tax 1739-1764. In 1755, he was patented 244 acres on Tomahawk and Frank's Cr. adj. Robert Vaughan Isham Vaughan [and Thomas Vaughan]. He sold 44 acres in 1758. In 1760, he bought another 150 acres on Flat Cr. (Amelia DB 07.144E), bringing his total acreage to 350. He paid taxes on 350 acres in the Amelia Co. Tithables Lists 1763-1768. He paid personal taxes 1782-1805 and land taxes 1782-1801, 1805. By 1782, he was only paying land taxes on 200 acres, but apparently still owned the remaining 150 acres as he later willed it to his son John. He sold 66 ½ acres in 1785 (Amelia DB 17.306) bringing his taxed land down to 133 ½ acres. Then when he died in 1802, he gave the 150 acres (where his son John was living) to his son John Vaughan; and he gave the 133 ½ acres to his daughter Susannah for life, then to his grandson Lewis. His son John started paying tax on the 150 acres in 1803.

The only discrepancy in this narrative is that Winefred Vaughan, widow married Richard Allen of Dinwiddie Co. 30 Jul 1779. If she is the widow of Lewis, then the above narrative is combining two people of the same name. Yet there is only one Lewis entry per year in the tax records from 1739 to 1802!

Milton Vaughan - L5B2-KZ5

Milton Vaughan was b. 1780-1790 (Census) and d. 1847 (WB 16.068). He was the son of James Vaughan and his second wife Mary Jeter (Chancery 1804-009, 1804-022, 1807-010, 1807-015). Milton m. Rebecca C. Craddock 3 Oct 1811 and was still m. to her as of 1824 (Amelia DB 26.355). His children were: son James Oscar Vaughan, son Egbert G. Vaughan, son Edwin A. Vaughan, dau. Henrietta J. Vaughan, Harriett? dau. Augusta Vaughan & dau. Martha Vaughan, dau. Mary Amanda Morton (she predeceased him), dau. Virginia Wimbish, dau. Ann Eliza Townes Rowlett (Chancery Cases 1848-011, 1848-019, 1850-001). He paid personal taxes 1801, 1804-1847 and land taxes 1811-1847. He appears in numerous deeds from 1810-1848.

Nicholas Vaughan - MVC3-VSG

Nicholas Vaughan was b. in the 1600s in Charles City Co., the son of William Vaughan and his wife Sarah. He d. abt. 1730. His wife’s name was Ann. She married Henry Fitz after Nicholas died (Chancery 1743-001). There is a lot of circumstantial evidence that points of Robert Vaughan, Sr., Thomas Vaughan, Isham Vaughan, Abraham Vaughan of Charlotte Co. & Lewis Vaughan as his children.
