Vaughn, Absalom Tilman, PO Selfville born Feb 5, 1848 at Cedar Bluff Cherokee Co Ala,
entered as private spring 1865 at Lougs(?) Cove AL in
the 12th ALA Capt. McTidmore and
continued until captured and paroled at
Selma Ala April 1865.  Worked in nitre works every
4th man was detached
to go to Trout(?)


Part 2 - Cherokee County Alabama, Confederate Pension Application for Hartwell Vaughn,
who says he did not desert the service, but was
captured, applies for pension. Claims beginning
1891.




Part 3 - Cherokee County Alabama, Southern Claims Commission Approved Claims, 1871-1880
 for Hartwell Vaughn, who says he was always a union
man, and never supported the confederacy.
Claim begins around 1872,
submitted to Congress 1878.

acquainted with Hartwell Vaughan whose name is
signed to the foregoing application, and
that I know of my own knowledge
that the said Hartwell Vaughn did serve as set forth in
the application,
and that he did not desert the service, but was captured.

Application for the Relief of Confederate Soldiers & Widows.  The State of Alabama, Cherokee
County.  To the honorable board of pension
examiners of said county: 
Your petitioner Hartwell Vaughn respectfully
represents to your honorable board that he is a
resident citizen of
Cherokee county, in the state of Alabama, and that he resided in said state
on the first day of January in 1899; that he enlisted in the
service of the confederate states
as a private in company C in the 6th
regiment of Cavalry on the __ day of February 1862, at
Cedar Bluff, in
the State of Alabama and that he was honorably discharged from such service
on the 17 day of June 1864; that he is now unable to make a
living by manual labor on account
of old age; that he is at the time
filing ths application 70 years of age and that his post office
address
is Round Mountain, Alabama...... 
signs with his mark.

Soldiers or Sailors Application fo the Relief of needy Confederate Soldiers & Sailors.....
is 67 years old & had disease of the lungs.
PO is Round Mt.
Business of Farming
taxable property consists of 1 horse

he is infirm old age suffered physically incapable of making a livelihood by labor being now 62
years of age.  Signs with his mark

County of Cherokee
Personally appeared before me, R. R. Savage Judge of Probate in and for said county. H. Vaughn,
who being duly sworn deposeth and saith that
when a private in Company C of 6th regiment of GA
and while in discharge
of his duty in the service of the confederate states he contracted disease. 
And in consequence of which disease & disability resulting
therefrom he has been rendered
physically incapable of making a
livelihood by labor; that he was a resident of Alabama on the
13th day
of February, 1891, and is a resident at the date of this application;  that he is engaged in
the business of farming that his taxable property
does not exceed four hundred dollars in value,
and that his salary and
gross income does not amount to four hundred dollars per year.



Apr 5, 1894
Hartwell Vaughn.......contracted disease and is 65 yrs old.



Jun 21, 1895
After an examination and investigation of the within application we report that said applicant is
worthy and recommend that the application
be recd.

County of Cherokee - before me R. R. Savage Judge of Probate in and for said county in said state
personally appeared Hartwell Vaughn who being
duly sworn deposes and says: that while in the
military or naval service
of this state, or confederate states, he was a private in company C of 6
regiment of GA, and that he did not desert the service of this state or confederate states.  That
while in the discharge of his duties as such,
in the __ day of ___ 1862 at Moss (probably means
Mossy) Creek, in the
state of Tenn he was shocked by “Bumm Shell” & is 68 yrs old..

Remarks
The claimant is a farmer nearly 90 years of age.  He is a resident of Cherokee Co, AL.  He swears
that he was opposed to secession & always
favored the Union cause.  That he did nothing in favor of
the
confederates & was ready and willing to aid the Union & had no kindred in the confederate Army. 
He was a soldier in the war of 1812 & is now
drawing a pension.  One of his _______ is a Union man
that has been
allowed a claim.

The property was taken in 1864 by Gen Sherman’s Army.  The fruit is not allowable.  Mare hogs &
sheep are found(?).  We recommend the payment of
 $156.

sworn deposes and says: my age is 83 years,
my PO address is Blue Pond,
state of Alabama, I have been a citizen of the state of Alabama
since
1835 I am now and always have been loyal to the United States.  During and through
the late war I remained a loyal adherent to the cause and
government of the united states,
and gave no aid or comfort to the enemy

That he has a claim against the United States for property & supplies taken by officers &
soldiers of General Shermans Army while said Army
was encamped near Gaylesville Cherokee
County Alabama.  That petitioner
was ____original owner of said property and still owns said
claim.


That your petitioner at the time of the taking of the property mentioned in the following schedule,
resided near Blue Pond Cherokee County
Alabama

To wit:
one white mare 6 years old 1st class worth $150.00
4 fat pork hogs 150# each - 600 # @ 10c
11 head of sheep @ $2.00
2 bushels dried fruit @ $2.00
total $236.00

(1) says my name is Hartwell Vaughn Sr age 89 years I live in Cherokee county Alabama. I have
lived here for 40 years my occupation is farming

(2) I am the claimant and am interested in the success of my claim.
(3)I was borned in Greenville District
(4)South Carolina. I was living where I __ live before the war and all the time during the war
and never changed my residence

(5)Nor, ??Buis?? Wife?? During the war = for the war
(6)all the time during the war I never done anything against the union in my life.
(7)I was willing to do all that I could for the union during the war and ___ yet I served in the war
of 1812 and am drawing

(8)a pension now.  I fed a great many soldiers during the war that was
about all that I could do I was to old I hardley ever left home.
(9)During the war = if I did I never ___
(10)it = I was not in the employment of the US
(11)government during the war= I never contributed any money or property
to the US government during the war.  I was old and not able to work and
didn't think I was able to give anything only what the
(12)soldiers eat off of me = I took sides

In this county  go to Montgomery Alabama as a
deligate to vote against secession and the
constitution of the southern
confederacy

(14) I was sorry to hear of the union forces being defeated at the battle of bills ?? and all other
 _____ during the war.  ??? was glad
when the rebels had to surrender.
(15)I don't no that I ever accrued any favors
(16)any more than other people = I have never
(17)taken the iron clad oath = James Westen, William Swausey, Hartwell Vaughn Jr. They
will testify to my loyalty if called on to do so

(18) I was never threatened?? With damages or injury on account of my war sentiments.

(20) officer during the war= I had some corn and meat taken from me by the rebels I don't
remember from much I ___ that I would never get any
pay?? For my corn, meat and I never
kept any acount I never did present
any acount to any rebel officer of soldier for pay didn't

(73)in this claim was taken = it was all taken
(74) in the day time = I made complaing to the soldiers but it never done any good they said
that they had to live off of

(75)some body = I never asked for any receipt I was old an never stirred about much
while the soldiers were here I new that they would take what
they wanted
(76)anyway = I have never received any ___ on this claim nor no other claim this is the
only claim that has ever been presented by me to
congress or any other tribunal? During
the war or since

(77)the close = this property was taken by troops under command of General Sherman
in 1864 they were encamped at Galesville in this

(78-79)county = I saw the US troops take from my stable one white or gray mare.  She
was 6 years old and in very good order. The soldiers
took 4 hogs out of my hog pen they
were fat and they were 2 & 3 years
old and would weigh not less than 150 each I saw
the US soldiers take
from my grass lot eleven head of sheep. They drove the sheep with
them
in the direction of their camp at Galesville in this

county I had 2 bushels of dried fruit in 2 baskets in my house and one of the soldiers
took that off with him.  The hogs were killed and hauld
off in a waggon.  The mare was
rode off by one of he soldiers = I don't
remember how many men there was = __ but to
the best of my recollection
there was about 15 or 20 soldiers = I don't remember son,
whether there
was an officer with the men or not I can't give any reason for their taking
the property only they said that they had to live on some body
___ they had to subsist in
the county.

(54) I lived in 3, or, 2 miles of the claimant
(55)during the war = I met him several times
(56) I will say once a month =  I con___ with him about the war he was strong for the
union us old men see each other when we met he was strong
for the union all the time
during the

(57)war = I so that he voted the union
(58)ticket against sucession = I saw tht the claimant never don any thing against the
union at any time during

(59)the war = all that I ever heard of him doing was for the unon cause
(60) his representation was good for layd?? = ?? all the time during the war
(61)P. J. Cleisdum??, William Swausey and my self were the union men in this
settlement Hartwell Vaughn Sr is included

(2) is farming = I am a daughter of the claimant and have never been married and
the claimant depends on me to make his support.  And I am

(72) inteested? In his claim = I was present when the property charged in this claim

(74) my father made some complaint but 15 the soldiers
(75) but it never don any good = there was no receipt asked for that I no of don't suppose
(76) there was = there has never been any payment made on this claim nor no other
claim to my father from the government that has never been any
claims but this
presented to congress or any other tribunal during

(77)the war nor since the close = this property was taken by troops under command
