Edmund Vaughan's
    Letter

      Frankfort, Decemter 20th, 1849

      Dear Son,
      I proceed to answer your letter as to relationship. My
      grandfather Vaughan was names Cornelius, he came
      from England and lived in Caroline Co., Virginia, I
      cannot tell anything about my grandmother Vaughan.
      My grandfather had eight children.  My father whose
      name was Edmund was the only son. My father married
      a Samuel, Milly married a Collins which is the family
      of Collins on Benson. Peggy married Russel Martin,
      they move to Mo, Calloway Co. near Fulton, he is dead.
      His three boys live_____John, William, and Sam (?)______________________________________

      married Stan Riddle.  They lived on Benson I think they
      are nearly all dead.  There may be some of their grand-
      children a living but I cannot say where. Molly married
      George Hutchinson. They live in Harrison Co., KY  I
      can not tell you anything about their children.  The old
      people are dead long ago. I do not know what has become
      of the children. My father had two sisters married in
      Virginia.  They never came to KY. One married a Vawter,
      the father of Henry Vawter that lived on Benson.  He
      hung himself and she I do not know who she married tho
      I have heard   _____ Horace ______.
      None of this family ever came to Ky.
      I expect you know my father had eight children, six by his
      first wife, to wit, William, John, Edmund, Walker, Elizabeth
      and Thos. (Thomas). By his second wife, James and Polly.
      They are all living except Thos. (Thomas.)  He married a
      Hughes and went to the south and there died leaving no
      children.
      My mother was Sally Samuel and died when Thos. was a
      baby. Grandfather Samuel was named William and his wife
      Ester.  I do not know who she was before marriage. My
      grandfather had five sons and five daughters.  The sons
      named Reuben, Thos., William, John, and Robert.  The girls
      names, Betty,  Fanny, Aggy, Sally and Pheobe.  Reuben
      Samuel lives in _________Co., MO was clerk of the court
      there.  Some of his boys are living in Liberty Clay Co.
      Missouri. They are selling goods doing very well. I understand
      one of them is in the land office in Clinton. Thos died never
      was married. William had two wives, Washington Samuel
      that lives in Scott and Polly Suggett his sister were by the
      first wife and he had three by the last.
      To girls and a boy named William.  I think he is in Mo.  John
      married and had no children and is dead. Robert married had
      but one child.  His name is John.  He lives in Mo in some of
      the upper Co. in the Platte.  His fater lives in Hicory/Henry
      Co., Ky.
      Now for the girls.  Betty Samuel married Harry Pemperton.
      They are dead and I think nearly all their children are dead.
      I do not know where they are. Fanny married Goodwin had
      two children.  Son and daughter. I think they are all dead.
      Aggy married Branham her first husband they had two
      children son and daughter. Her son was Daniel Branham
      that lived in New Castle.  I expect you saw him when there.
      Her second husband was Bullard.  She had two by him.
      Reuben and William.  You were aquainted with William
      Bullard and wife that lived near Sam Tinsley.  Her third
      husband was Towles(Tombs).  She had no children by him.
      She is dead.
      Sally was my mother.  Pheobe was married ___________

      children.  Her first husband was William Mountjoy and
      her second husband Thos. Gray _______________ again
      your grandfather Blanton was named Richard an your
      granmothers name was Sally.  Your grandfather was brother
      to Carter Blanton, John Blanton William, and James Blanton
      --Thomson Blanton and Benjamin and Mrs. Shipp who live
      in Linclon Co,. Mo are the children of John Blanton.  Also
      Dolly Hopkins---Carter Blantone has one son B_______
      that lives somewhere in Mo but cannot say where.  Thomson,
      Benjamin, ____ Mrs. Shipp, and Mrs Hopkins children are
      all relations of yours.
      Your grandmother was a Combs.  I do not know how many
      brothers and sisters she had but I know there is a long train
      of connections.  I think Doc Combs who lived in Independence
      Missouri is cousin of Mrs. Blanton.  I do not recollect
      Doc Irvins(Ivins-Givens) who you speak of.  He went from
      Clark or Montgomery I do knot know which.  I know Silas
      Irvins (Ivins-Givens) that married Combs, who went from
      Clark to Mo.  You said something about Della Ellis.  She
      is a daughter of old Benjamin Edington and granddaughter
      of old Mr. Hickman.  She is no way related to you __________________________________________Robert
      Samuel married Polly Blanton.  She was your second cousin
      only.  Darell and his children are all in Mo.

      I was born the 12th of May 1790.  Your mother Sythes was
      born the 28th of May 1795 and she died the 10th of October
      1837.  The names of the children and when born and died:

      The names of the children by my second wife

      Henry Vaughan                      Nov. 28, 1843        June 16, 1845
       

      I was married the first time the 21 of December 1815.  The
      second time to ELizabeth Monks the 17 of October 1839. The
      third time to Ellen Fox the 10 of June 1847. Elizabeth
      Vaughan my second wife was born the 10 of April, 1803
      and died Aug. 16, 1844
      Ellen Vaughan my third was born July 7, 1799.
      Harry I have gone as far as I can.  I think I have given you
      everything_______________________________________

      we would let pass. The sail has commenced about your
      grandmothers property. I think it will take two years to
      close.  I expect the land and negroes will be sold in March
      next, the second Monday.  The land will be sold on a note
      of one and two years and the negroes on a credit of twelve
      months.  the other little property will not more than pay
      her debts---John Clay is the administrator.  All parties
      are anxious to have the business settled.  They want their
      money and when they get it there just a little to a share.
      Harry, tell Ed to hurry about his house and get it done by
      the time I come out.  I do not know how long I shall stay.
      It may be some time.  Ellen wants a sensative rose ____
      of you must get one and send it ____ first safe chance.
      Tell Ed I want t________ wild geese and hazelnuts and
      anything any of you will send.  Tell Mary, Eds wife, that
      Ellen weighs about two hundred pounds.

      Write word.  Harrison, give my love to the children when
      you see them ____________________________  It is my
      wish to come out in March next if nothing prevents my
      leaving home. If the sale of Mrs. Glantons property takes
      place the second Monday in March it will be the last of
      March if I come.  I think you will be satisfied with this ___.
