Indeed she was a wonderful researcher and recorder of information even though she did not drive or type. I wish that
I could have known her personally, but we did have lots of fun corresponding about the Vaughans and Rogers families in
Scott Couhty, VA and Hawkins and Hancock Counties TN.
In 1988 she sent to Mabel Harp, in Wagoner, Oklahoma,
a copy of an old Bible she had found. Mabel recognized it as belonging to my ancestor James Vaughan, born 1767, so she
sent a copy to me.Here is what Eula McNutt wrote on the top of the photo-
copied page: "From the former C.S. Kilgore home, Hancock Co TN where Sarah Jane Payne, w/o Swimpfield Vaughn and 2nd wife of James Roller died 1926." Probably Sarah Jane got this from John and Temperence Seal Vaughan when she and Swimpfield lived in their home on Copper Ridge. My cousin who owns this Bible and had never seen this before is Mrs. Omer Luana Lyon Robinette of Eidson TN.From Eula McNutt, Gate City VA Sept 13, 1987"
The names written in a fancy handwriting were:
James Vaughan was born September 27th 1767.
Sally--Eally?? (not sure of handwriting) Vaughan was born August 30th 1770.
The names of their children with their ages---
William Vaughan was born November 7th 1790.
Thomas Vaughan was born August 21, 1793
Allen Vaughan was born April 29th 1795
Nancy Vaughan was born August 6th 1797
James Vaughan was born March 05th 1799.
Later, Eula wrote me: "The Bible was very ragged.
No backs at all. What I found was in the middle, so it could have had more written on backs which are gone. Suppose we will never know."Another real miracle is that researchers with various family notes handed down to them have identified all the above children, and their birthdates have been verified from other sources kept by descendants.
Through deed and probate records, other children of James born 1767 have been identified. One source says that the wife
listed above was an Elizabeth Walker, but James' will names
widow Sally. These may have been the same person, with
variations of the name. Thanks, thanks to Eula Mae McNutt for the wonderful work she did. It benefited and will continue to benefit many people in
the future.
