William Vaughan
Born 1625
Wales

Submitted by Warren and Peg Olson

Wales is quite common although the original spelling has changed from various forms of Vaughn,
Vaun, Vaugh, Vaughan, Vychan or Bychan. The name meant little or short in the Welsh language.

Wm. (1) and Sarah were the parents of at least 7 son.  The daughters are not known at this time.

Wm. (1) was born in 1625 in Wales and died in 1684 in Charles City,Virginia. After Wm. (1)'s
death, Sarah married James Severcar. Each of Wm.(1)'s son inherited 1/7 of his father's estate.
Each son  had 169 acres in the quit rent rolls in 1704.  These 7 sons were very young when their
father died. The family resided in Bristol Parish of Prince George County. Many if not all the
records were destroyed in the Civil war.  Therefore, there is little know of the 7 sons and their
descendants

Wm. (1) was my 10th great grandfather.

Children of Wm. (1) and Sarah Ellen are:
2. i. Wm. Vaughan2 (2), b. 1651, Charles City, Virginia;
d. 1728, Prince George Co.,Virginia
ii. Richard Vaughan, d. 1749.
iii. Nicholas Vaughan.
iv. James Vaughan, d. 1735.
v. Samuel Vaughan, d. 1718.

County Patent Book 8 page 149. Wm. Vaughan had at least one child named Wm. (3).
Wm. (3) was born around 1695 and died about 1754.Wm.(3) married a woman named Priscilla
Pierce or Pearce.
Wm. (2) was born in 1665 in Charles City,Virginia. and died in 1728 in Prince George Co.,
Virginia.  His wife was Ann ? who died in 1730 in Virginia.
William and brother Richard did obtain a joint patent for 280 acres of land between Hatchers
Run and Moncusneck Creek and did later divide the land.Wm. for 5 pounds consideration sold

Virginia, and died in Virginia.

Notes for Wm. Vaughan (3):
Wm. (3) was married to Priscilla (Pierce or Pearce) not proven. They raised five children in Surry
and Brunswick Co.,Va.They named their first son Pierce, perhaps Priscilla's maiden name. This
was a common practice then to name a son after the wife's maiden name.
Wm(3) was born in 1699 and died in 1754 in Brunswick Co.,Va.No know dates are known for
Priscilla.  They raised 5 children.  All remained in Virginia until their adulthood. As of now, I do

and Rebecca (Perry). She was born March 19, 1733/34 in Sussex Co., Virginia and died
1797 in Greensville,Virginia

Notes for Pierce Vaughan:
Pierce and his brothers were born near Hatcher's Run south of Appomattox. His father had
originally homesteaded on the Blackwater River. When Pierce moved on to Three Creeks
and at the time of his father's death he had moved on east to GreensvilleCo. Pierce's children
are documented in the Bristol Parish Registery. Pierce was a patron of the American
Revolution. He supplied meat to the troops. It is through Pierce that I (Peg Olson) became a
member of the D.A.R The 1797 will of Pierce's wife, Faitha Pennington Vaughan, is in
Greenville WB 1:358.
Pierce was the son of William (3).I know very little about Pierce. He died before his wife and
left a will providing for his wife and children. At the time of his death he owned 880 acres of
Virgina land. I do not know where Pierce and his wife, Faitha, are buried. I wonder if Pierce
was named after his mother's maiden name, but can not document this info. Her name was
Priscilla-perhaps Pearce or Pierce. Priscilla and Pierce had eight children.  Some of the
children remained in the Virginia area and several moved to the Columbia, Tenn., Maury
County.

(1)) was born 1770 in Brunswick,Virginia, and died 1849 in Maury Co., Tennessee. He
married Susannah Freeman Abt. 1790 in North Carolina or Virginia She was born in
Virginia, and died in Tennessee.

Notes for Dixon Vaughan:
Dixon Vaughan, the son of Pierce and Faitha Pennington. Dixon spent most of his
adult life in Columbia,Tennessee., Maury County. He was married to Sussanah Freeman.
They raised seven children. Several remained in the Maury Co.,Tennessee area and many
relatives are there today. My ancestor, Hartwell Freeman Vaughan, moved on to Wayne
Co., Illinois. Dixon died in 1849.Some of his children served in the Civil War, acting as
spys for the South while infiltrating the Union lines.  There is a Vaughan family cemetery
in Columbia, Tennessee.  It is located on a bluff overlooking the Duck River. More that 30
years ago, the TVA planned to use the area as a flood plane and condemned the cemetery
area and closed off the road to the cemetery. As of today the TVA has not finished the project
and still the cemetery remains off bounds.  A plan was made to have the cemetery moved to
another location but that has not happened. I visited in that area in the 1980's.  I talked with
a Mrs. Vaughan-Kennedy.  She could tell by my accent,or lack of one, that I was a Yankee.
She was astonished to find a Yankee relative.  She had no idea that part of the Vaughan clan
went north and fought with the Union. I have numerous pictures of stones in the Vaughan
Cemetery shared by family in Columbia. No one seems to know where Dixon and Sussanah
were buried.
